Born on February 8, 1973, in Atchison, Kansas, Carlen was the beloved son of Carlen Carter Sr. and the late Sherry Carter.
Carlen spent most of his life in Weston, Missouri, where he developed a strong sense of community and an unwavering commitment to serving others. He graduated from West Platte High School in Weston and went on to attend Missouri Western State University before transferring to Park University, where he furthered his education. Throughout his life, Carlen embodied the values of hard work, perseverance, and devotion to his family.
A proud and dedicated worker, Carlen began his career at Harley-Davidson, a company that not only sparked his passion for the automotive industry but also allowed him to finance his education. When Harley-Davidson closed its doors, Carlen embraced new opportunities and became a valued employee at ABB in Jonesboro, Arkansas, where he continued to demonstrate his dedication to his profession and community.
But Carlen was not only a man of work—he was a man of service. He served as an alderman for the city of Weston, Missouri, and later as the mayor of Weston, a position that allowed him to make a real difference in the lives of his fellow residents. His leadership, integrity, and compassion for others were evident in everything he did. His legacy as a public servant will be remembered by those whose lives he touched.
Outside of work and civic duties, Carlen had a deep love for sports. He was an avid golfer and a diehard Kansas City Chiefs fan. His enthusiasm for sports extended beyond being a spectator; he was actively involved in coaching youth sports for his children, including football, baseball, and basketball. These moments spent coaching and mentoring young athletes were some of the most fulfilling of his life, as he truly believed in the power of sports to teach valuable lessons about teamwork, perseverance, and discipline.
Above all else, Carlen cherished his family. As a father and grandfather, he took great pride in his role as a loving “Papa” to his children and grandchildren. His greatest joy came from being with his family, whether it was cheering on his kids in sports or enjoying quiet moments together at home. He was a steady presence in the lives of his children, Chase, Ty, and Willow, and he will be dearly missed by his grandchildren, Myles and Jordyn, whom he adored beyond words.
Carlen’s devotion to his family extended to his siblings, including his brothers Ed and Ernie and his sister Vicky. He was deeply loved by them, and his loss leaves an indescribable void in their lives. His memory will live on in the hearts of his extended family and friends, who will always remember his warm smile, his generous spirit, and his dedication to making the world a better place.
Carlen is survived by his father, Carlen Carter Sr. (Barbara) of Iatan, Missouri; his former wife, Lisa Carter of Jonesboro, Arkansas; his children, Chase Carter of Jonesboro, Ty Carter of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and Willow Carter of Jonesboro; his brothers Ed Carter (Joye) of St. Mary, Missouri, and Ernie Carter of Atchison, Kansas; his sister Vicky Carter-Harris (Lloyd) of Weston, Missouri; and his beloved grandchildren, Myles and Jordyn. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sherry Carter.
A memorial service to honor Carlen’s life and legacy will be held in both Jonesboro, Arkansas, and Weston, Missouri, at a later date, allowing family, friends, and the community to gather and pay their respects. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a youth sports charity in Carlen’s memory, reflecting his lifelong commitment to supporting young people.
Carlen’s passing leaves an emptiness in the lives of those who knew him, but his spirit, his love for his family, and his tireless dedication to his community will continue to live on in those he leaves behind. He was a man who lived life with heart and soul, and he will be dearly missed.
